Reflection Connection:
The best educators are reflective in their teaching, adapting what went well in a lesson, what needs to be revised to make it a better part of the lesson, and what needs to be scrapped altogether in order to create opportunity for adjustments to the lesson. This assignment showcases not only my reflection on the lesson, but my collaboration with my mentor teacher to create effective next steps for the next lesson. Throughout my PE internship, I learned how to work with a broader audience of students than I’m used to being a special education math teacher, and working with a peer/mentor teacher whose classroom management and peer grouping views differ from mine. That worked well for me in the long run because I was able to see how she applied her classroom management skills to her classroom and I was able to adapt some of her teachings to my own classroom. She gave me ideas on becoming a member of professional learning groups, both through the state and on social media, to further my understanding and lesson planning around physical and health education. Being a part of these learning communities will help sharpen my knowledge about sports or activities that I’m not totally familiar with to further engage my students in the lesson.
Another way that Lana helped me reflect during my lesson was by using assessment data productively. This is important because it helped my students and I utilize assessment results to set attainable goals. These goals set the students up for success throughout the remainder of the quarter and aided in the overall effectiveness of their personal fitness improvement plans.
